Effecting Identity.

Teen dramas, films and the internet have evolved the past few years, and I believe that these have affected young peoples personal identity. Socail networks have grown on the internet and there is more about. People are using the internet to show the world who they are through websites such as Facebook, Myspace, YouTube, Blogger and many more. More people are joining these networks as they want to express their individuality to everyone, which is making being yourself more acceptable in society now. These networks are also a good way to help people express who they are, for example a housewife can become a singer by posting videos of herself singing, a cleaner can show their dance moves through videos, a receptionist can be a song writer/poet by writing poetry on their blog and more. The Internet has now become a new culture and community where people can talk with anyone from all over the world. Youtube has been said to be the "webcam and screen community" as people will record videos to show their identity and people will reply via videos and comments. This helps to show what other people think about who they are and their identity. When people create these they gain self awareness that they could be talking to anyone in the world and one day they will watch their own video back and you then begin to be in a self reflective mood.

As people become very aware of these things they may decide to change and alter their identity so that they will be liked by other people. This then means that people begin to lose their identity as they are changing themselves so that other people will like them. It is then a competition to be seen by everyone and get as many views/friends as possible, meaning people are creating this false identity just to be seen and not liked for who you are. These false idenitys lead to an identity crisis, if someone finds out your fake they may get annoyed as the have admired the person you are. People should not play with their identity, change their history and create stories as you will soon lose who the real you is.

My own identity has been constructed through my life style. I am who I am because of my family and how I have been brought up, life experiences, friends I chose to hang out with, where I live and go to school/college. However I have to admit that media has an influence on who I am. From media I believe many teens choose who they want to be like after watching teen dramas or seeing someone on a socail networking site. Also the news helps you to create your views on a topic.

Teen Dramas

Today there are many teen dramas on television as well as film. On television in the UK there is a wide variety of both British and American teen dramas such as Skins, Hollyoaks, The Inbetweeners, Misfits, One Tree Hill, 90210, Glee, Gossip Girl, The Vampire Diaries, Waterloo Road and many more. I believe that some of these teen dramas have an unrealistic representation of youth. I think it’s because of how the media portrays teenagers within the news and that producers only create teen dramas for entertainment. Only a few of these teen dramas actually show some realistic representation of teens but they are still slightly extravagant to create entertainment for the audience.

Teen Drama Case Study Intro.

I will be researching into teen dramas and how youth are represented in them, also whether it is a realistic view or not. There are many teen dramas on television and in film; however only a small minority of these actually give a realistic representation of British teens. In these media products teens are always being depicted as bad and out of control, also the problems the people face in the teen dramas are not always the common ones faced by today’s teenagers. In most television shows teenagers are shown to take drugs, binge drink and smoke, but this is not true for the majority. It gives teenagers a bad representation when most teenagers my age I know are more worried and are concentrating more on getting a good education to get a good job. Shows should be showing the real problems that are faced by teens, such as family issues, education problems and more.
